Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
Nestled on Ireland’s southeast coast, Waterford offers a heady mix of fresh meadows and golden sand - the ideal setting for some exceptional golf courses. Jewels like Faithlegg and Waterford Golf Club justifiably rank among the best in the world.
The work of renowned golf course architect Paddy Merrigan, Faithlegg Golf Course offers Merrigan’s trademark challenges - rolling greens, water hazards, and targeted sand traps - across 6,100 metres of mature trees and beautiful grounds just 7km from Waterford City. Home to the 2000 and 2001 Ladies Irish Open and the 2007, 2008, and 2009 PGA Euro Pro Tour, the course finishes with the truly memorable 16th, 17th, and 18th holes.
Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Mount Juliet Golf Course has some stunning standout holes, including a par-3 3rd hole from an elevated tee to a green flanked by a stream and lake and a par-5 10th hole, which tests golfer tactics with its grove of trees. The par-72, 6,400-metre layout offers undulating fairways, numerous water hazards, and contoured greens, all set against the backdrop of a historic Irish estate, 39 km from Waterford City.
The parkland course at Mount Wolseley, a luxury resort 88km from Waterford City, presents a serious challenge for golfers. Only big hitters would dare tee off from the championship markers at this par-72, 6,700-metre 18-hole championship course designed by Christy O’Connor Jr. More than half the holes have water features, multi-tiered greens are hard to interpret, and 8 out of the 10 par-fours are more than 365 metres long. Lavish facilities make it worth the effort, though.
Completed in 2012, a redesign by celebrated golf course architect Jeff Howes maintained the integrity of Tramore Golf Club’s existing 1894, 18-hole course and delivered 9 new holes of comparable quality. Set against the backdrop of the Comeragh Mountains, Tramore is a parkland course on undulating terrain, with many fairways flanked by copses of mature trees. The signature hole is the 346-metre, severe right dogleg, par-4 4th, which demands 2 long carries over scrub and rough ground.
Set near the Comeragh and Knockmealdown mountains and the Drum Hills, the terrain at West Waterford Golf Club is certainly undulating. Designed by Eddie Hackett, the course demonstrates his trademark sensitivity to the natural landscape. The front 9 holes are laid out on a large plateau, with a meandering stream influencing the 3rd and 4th holes. You’ll have to avoid the Brockey River on the 12th and 16th holes. West Waterford has formed the Dungarvan Golf Triangle with the Gold Coast and Dungarvan golf clubs, so you can play all three for a concessionary green fee.
