Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
Glistening against a backdrop of exceptional natural beauty, Schull is a jewel among West Cork’s villages. With its appealing harbour, numerous nearby islands, and clean Atlantic winds, it is an ideal base for sea lovers all year round.
Hook Lighthouse is a remarkably well-preserved medieval lighthouse dating from the early 13th century. It has served sailors and shipping for an almost unbroken 800 years and is believed to be one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. Automated since 1996, it is now open to the public.
The Republic of Ireland’s only planetarium is in Schull. Enjoy awe-inspiring views of the sky at night from anywhere in the northern hemisphere using the single sphere sky projector on the planetarium’s 8-metre dome. Launched in 1989, the facility has been a great boon to local and visiting astronomers, and one of its Star Shows also makes for an unusual night out on your holiday.
Open from mid-March until the end of September at the Pier Road car park, Schull Country Market offers a unique selection of locally-produced foods and crafts, all sold by their makers. Select some snacks for a beach picnic, savour a home-baked cake, or bring home some locally-smoked meat for dinner.
Divecology offers a “Discover Scuba Diving” programme for those who have never floated before, allowing you to float weightless underwater. If you enjoy that, you might be tempted to learn to dive with their PADI “Open Water Diver” scheme. Diving trips take in the fascinating shipwrecks and reefs off Mizen head. Equipment hire and air fills are also available.
Seasonal ferries run from Schull Harbour to Cape Clear and Heir Island. Cape Clear is Ireland’s most southerly island and arguably its most beautiful. Heir/Hare Island has a diverse range of flora and fauna and is perfect for boating, sailing, sail-boarding, swimming, diving, angling, and bird photography.
Charter boats leave from Schull Harbour for sea angling off Fastnet Rock, the reefs, and local shipwrecks. You can also try shark and night fishing, with tackle available for sale and hire.
Lough Beg Open Farm is located in Lissacaha, outside Schull. It is home to a wide variety of farm animals and poultry, a vegetable garden with some 80 raised beds, and 1.5km hill farm walk. Enjoy exceptional iews over Cape Clear, the Fastnet Rock, Crookhaven Bay, Dunmanus Bay, Sheep’s Head, Lissacaha Lake, Rathtoora and Mount Gabriel.
A musical feast staged over three days in July, the Harvest Moon Festival is one of the highlights of Schull’s entertainment calendar. Acts in 2013 included The Bonfire Band, Ceili Allstars, John Walsh, Mongoose, Seany K and friends, and Wiggle.
The picturesque village of Schull is a place for those who like to browse for unique items. The bustling Main Street has some wonderfully different shops offering a wide range of products, many of them produced locally, as well as a lively collection of pubs, cafés and restaurants to keep you supplied with refreshments.
Open from mid-March through October, the award-winning Mizen Head Signal Station perches on the most southerly point in Ireland. Explore the visitor centre in the Irish Lights Signal Station, climb the 99 steps, scale the famous arched bridge, and enjoy unrivalled views up the south and west coasts. There is a tearoom and shop on site, with new exhibits opening regularly.
