Hi, my name is Caragh. It's my responsibility to ensure that all our customers have a great rental experience on PlacesToStay.com. My favourite place to stay in Ireland is Dingle!
Tucked away in the northwest, Mayo is often overlooked when it comes to family holidays, but, with pristine beaches, gorgeous countryside, and a huge variety of indoor and outdoor entertainment, it really is the ideal destination for all ages.
It’s hard to please everybody, but a trip to Westport House & Pirate Adventure Park covers most bases. Parents may be more appreciative of the historic attractions of Westport House, although the real-life dungeons should spark a thrill among children. The adventure park is kid heaven, with a Thrills ‘n’ Chills ride, swan pedalo boats on the lake, Westport House express train, a pirates’ playground, and pitch & putt. The restaurant has menu options for all ages.
Bring your bikes to Mayo and set off on the 42km Great Western Greenway, Ireland’s longest off-road walking and cycling trail. The lack of vehicular traffic means even learner cyclists can feel safe pedaling along among unspoilt scenery on the route of the famous Westport to Achill railway, which closed in 1937. If you’re worried about shorter legs, the route breaks down into manageable sections between Westport and Newport, Newport and Mulranny, and Mulranny and Achill.
The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, 8 km east of Castlebar, might not sound like much fun for kids, as it houses the national collection of objects relating to traditional Irish rural life since 1850, but it actually represents a great day out for all the family. As well as the museum galleries and the 19th century Victorian Gothic house, the grounds are a wonderland of gardens, woodland walks, a river, and a lake. There are special family events, tours, talks, workshops, a Saturday club, and a summer school.
If in doubt, take the family to the beach. Mayo has some of the best beaches in Ireland, and its prize jewels are on Achill Island, home to no less than five Blue Flag beaches including Keem, Trawmore Strand (Keel), Dooega, and Golden Strand (Dugort). Whether your kids are at the bucket-and-spade stage or they’re mad for watersports, you are in the right place. All Achill beaches are safe for swimming, and the Atlantic waves at Keel strand make it a popular destination for surfing and sea kayaking. There are two scuba diving schools on Achill.
Rainy days are not unheard-of in Mayo, so Mayo Leisure Point is a handy option for keeping all ages entertained under the one roof. Located in Castlebar and open every day of the week, Mayo Leisure Point offers bowling, laser games, arcade games, an indoor adventure play area for younger kids, a cinema, gym, pool, spa, and dining areas, so there really is something for virtually everyone here.
