My name is Marie, born & raised in the most scenic county in Ireland, Kerry. I work in the supply team at PlacesToStay.com & it's my job to make sure you find your perfect holiday home!
With its gorgeous national park, endless beaches, and a centuries-old reputation for hospitality, Kerry is heaven for families. Whether you are seasoned or first-time visitors, have a go at some of our favourite family activities in Kerry.
Tralee is home to one of the country’s biggest indoor water-based leisure facilities, ideal for children and adults. Swimming pools are just the start of the story at the Aqua Dome, where you can ride the waves, grapple with river rapids, glide down the lazy river, plummet down the outdoor falling rapids, and relax among the whirlpool spas. The adult-only Health Suite has saunas, a steam room, plunge pool, and sunbed - for when you need to get away from the small ones.
Be sure you don’t miss the actual cave when you visit Crag Cave in Castleisland: With the exciting outdoor and indoor play areas and the delicious fare at the Garden Restaurant, you could forget that you came to see the 1-million-year-old cavern of stalagmites and stalactites beneath your feet. Situated in Castleisland, 2 km off the N21, the 350-metre show cave is full of natural limestone formations with evocative names like the Crystal Gallery and the Madonna.
A good option for a rainy day is a visit to Dingle Oceanworld, where a wall of glass is all that stands between you and Ireland’s largest collection of sharks. Indulge your inner Antarctic explorer with the Polar Penguin Display, which houses 10 Gentoo penguins in a remarkably realistic icy setting. Other attractions include a touch tank, displays of tropical fish, and a collection of Amazonian freshwater species- including piranhas.
Located 6km from Killarney on the N71, the world-famous Muckross House anchors a spectacular garden in the heart of Killarney National Park, where your children can roam free among acres of rolling lawns and mature trees. Show them how life was lived a century ago with a visit to the Muckross Traditional Farms, which features three working farms from Kerry of the 1930s. You can also watch potters, weavers, and bookbinders at work, and finish off your trip with a meal or a snack at the glass-fronted restaurant.
Fun has reached a new level in Killarney, with the launch of the Play at Height adventure courses at An Oige International Youth Hostel, Aghadoe, Killarney. Intended for children under nine, the junior course features 15 climbing, sliding, crawling, and swinging elements just 1.5 metres from the ground, whereas the main course takes to the trees, with more than 30 features. It varies between four and ten metres above ground and includes cargo nets, zip lines, see- saws, and much more.
Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre (on the Ballyard Road, outside Tralee town) is an imaginative fusion of nature and adventure, with water activities, wildlife tours, and a high-tech, eco-friendly centre for nature exhibits. Take a short guided wildlife and nature boat trip to observe the residents of Tralee’s wetlands. You can also rent pedal boats and rowing boats in the activity area.
