Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
For the freedom of coastal wilderness and the buzz of a lively city, take a family holiday in Galway. A host of family-friendly hotels and restaurants that welcome kids with open arms make Galway the perfect location for a family break.
Ireland’s biggest aquarium, Galway Atlantaquarium, provides a total immersion in sea life from the opening exhibit - a splash pool of sea bass that mimics the Atlantic waves with a tonne of salt water that crashes against the glass every 40 seconds. Other exciting exhibits include the ray pool, ocean tank, and touch pools. Situated on the seafront in Salthill, the aquarium also runs regular interactive science events for children of all ages.
Brigit's Garden in Roscahill is an environmental and cultural heritage centre inspired by the Celtic seasonal festivals. Extending over 11 acres, it is one of Ireland’s most original gardens, incorporating native woodland and wildflower meadows, a nature trail, ogham trees, a children's discovery trail, a living willow play area, an ancient fairy fort, and the biggest calendar sundial in Ireland. Brigit’s Garden runs a full programme of family-friendly special events throughout the year.
If your gang are feeling a little cooped up or restless, a visit to Connemara National Park is the perfect remedy. The park extends over 2,957 hectares of scenic mountains, bog, heath, grassland, and woodland, with a visitor centre in Letterfrack. Here you can see an audio-visual show on the Connemara landscape and make use of the (indoor and outdoor) picnic areas. There are also nature trails, a playground, hill walks, and a tea room, as well as a programme of guided walks and events for children throughout the year.
Galway City Museum is nothing like the dusty, silent caverns of untouchable knowledge that we used to associate with the word “museum.” A bright and airy, modern building, located right in the heart of Galway close to the famous Spanish Arch, it houses an imaginative selection of permanent and touring exhibitions focusing on archaeology, local history, and art & craft. Children are welcomed with special activity sheets that will help them discover more about the items and exhibitions on show.
The pool is a great outlet for active kids, particularly when the weather makes outdoor activities less than enticing, so Leisureland, on the promenade in Salthill, is a godsend for many families. With a children’s pool, bubble pool, inflatable pirate ship, paddle boats, and a 65-metre water slide, there’s plenty to entertain younger members of the family - while you get on with perfecting your stroke in the 25-metre competitive pool. Other children’s activities include mini golf and a soft play area.
