Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
There's a lot more to Galway than the bohemian vibe of Galway City, a thriving Irish culture, and the windswept beauty of Connemara: The county is also home to some lovely beaches. Here are some of our favourites.
The stretch of beach along Dog’s Bay and Gurteen Bay is quite possibly the most beautiful in the West of Ireland. Located about 4km from the idyllic village of Roundstone in Connemara, the beaches lie back to back and make up a spectacular stretch of coastline that offers unimpeded views of Errisbeg and the surrounding landscape. Dog’s Bay is a breathtaking horseshoe bay lined with more than 2 km of icing-sugar sand. Unusually for this area, the sand at Dog’s Bay and Gurteen Bay is not composed of limestone but of ground seashells - hence its pristine whiteness. Both beaches are well sheltered from currents and deemed safe for swimming and such water sports as windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Silverstrand in Barna is a sheltered, sandy beach about 3 km from Salthill. Bordered by a cliff on one side and by rocks on the other, it is particularly safe and very popular with young families. With Galway Bay laid out in all its splendour directly in front, it offers wonderful views. A promenade offers parking for about 60 cars. Swimming is best at low tide, as the beach is generally covered at high tide. Lifeguards patrol the beach in summer months.
Follow the R336 from Galway City to discover An Trá Mhór (the big strand), a delightful sandy beach in the rural Gaeltacht townland of Indreabhán. Another one of Galway's Blue Flag beaches, it is immaculate and suitable for swimming, with lifeguards operating during the summer months. Check the times on the information board at the beach.
The coastline at Salthill is lined by a necklace of small beaches divided by outcrops. Easily accessible from Galway City, Salthill offers an extensive promenade, perfect for long bracing walks, with a choice of sandy and pebbly beaches. Lifeguards patrol this Blue Flag beach from mid-May to the end of September. Hugely popular during fine spells in the summer, Salthill is also a Special Area of Conservation.
