Hi, my name is Caragh. It's my responsibility to ensure that all our customers have a great rental experience on PlacesToStay.com. My favourite place to stay in Ireland is Dingle!
The capital of County Clare, Ennis is a bustling, vibrant town with great shopping and plenty of urban flair. The place to stay for any tour of the region, Ennis serves visitors well with great food and accommodation and some of the best traditional music you will ever hear.
Housed in the same building as the tourist office, Clare Museum is a fascinating little spot that does an admirable job of outlining the county’s colourful history. The Riches of Clare exhibition showcases a large loan of Clare artefacts from the National Museum of Ireland, the de Valera Museum collection, and local collections, delivering great insights into Clare life.
Ennis is well-known as a hub for Irish traditional music. The regional base of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for the Meitheal region, Cois na hAbhna has an auditorium for céilís and concerts, a teach cheoil for energetic weekly sessions, and classrooms for music lessons.
An innovative art project involving 15 professional artists, Wallcandy has turned parts of Ennis into fun artworks. Local outlets provide maps so that you can find the creative displays, which show specific sites in a new and unusual way.
The Glór Gallery is housed in an RIAI Award-winning, light-filled music centre in the heart of Ennis. Its reputation has grown remarkably since its launch in 2001, with numerous high-profile exhibitions including Mike Byrne, Mick O’Dea, the National Gallery of Ireland, Brian Bourke, Basil Blackshaw, and Seán McSweeney, Patrick Pye.
From legendary independent stores to sleek modern favourites, Ennis is a great shopping destination. The town centre is full of pedestrian-friendly streets ideal for retail therapy. Visit Custy’s Music Shop for traditional music and instruments, while Ennis Bookshop is perfect for local-interest books and maps.
Situated in the heart of the town, this 13th century Franciscan friary, founded by the O'Briens of Thomond (who dominated north Munster at the time) has a wealth of marvellous carvings from the 15th and 16th centuries, all sculpted from local limestone. The sacristy is a remarkable feature, with a ribbed, barrel-vaulted ceiling.
The town of Ennis is home to an impressive 67 sculptures. Embark on your own treasure trail and see if you can find them all. They include “Trinity” on Harmony Row, “Doing the Deal” at the Market Square, a large bronze head of Eamon de Valera near the courthouse, and a monument to Daniel O’Connell in the central square.
As a stage for traditional Irish music, Ennis has few rivals, and some of the best places to hear the finest performances are in the local pubs at night. Weekends are a good time for sessions in Ciaran's Bar, Kelly’s, Mary Kearney’s, O’Halloran’s, Paddy Quinn’s, and Preachers. (Among many others!)
For a few days every July, the Ennis Street Festival brings a party atmosphere to the town, with an exciting blend of acrobatics, music, dance, drama, art, and puppetry. Enjoy everything from street art to duck racing, all organised by the community and featuring national and international artists.
Just outside Ennis you’ll find the tranquil retreat of Ballyalla Lake, on the River Fergus. Enjoy the scenery with a picnic and take a stroll around Ballyalla Castle, now in ruins, which withstood a siege in 1642.
