Dunmore East is a neglected gem of the sunny southeast. An idyllic fishing village perched in historic tranquility on a cliff edge, Dunmore East is a place to restore your mind, body and soul.
Set atop spectacular red sandstone cliffs, Dunmore East enjoys wonderful views of Hook Head lighthouse in County Wexford, but the village itself is worth admiring too. The main street is lined with traditional thatched cottages, and the bustling harbour is dominated by an eye-catching 19th-century lighthouse and cliffs thronged with noisy seabirds.
Dunmore East looks straight across the estuary to Hook Head lighthouse, less than an hour’s drive from the village. The oldest functioning lighthouse in the world, Hook Head dates back to the 13th century. Take a guided tour and climb the 115 steps to the observation balcony for wonderful views.
Dunmore East has a selection of sheltered and pretty coves ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The most popular are Councillors, a south-facing beach backed by towering red sandstone cliffs, and Lawlors, in the village. Other coves tucked away in the village include Stony Cove, Ladies’ Cove, Men’s Cove, and Badger’s Cove.
Dunmore East hosts a long-established International Bluegrass Festival every August. Indoor and outdoor venues welcome throngs from around the world for a host of free gigs and jamming sessions embracing bluegrass, country, rhythm, roots, new grass, and blues.
Dunmore East’s new Medieval Museum charts the local area’s history from the Anglo-Norman siege of Waterford in 1170 to the end of the 17th century. Exhibition highlights include the wonderfully illustrated Great Charter Roll of Waterford dating from 1373, spectacular cloth-of-gold vestments from 1460, the Great Parchment Book, and the bearing sword and cap of maintenance of King Henry VIII.
The Dunmore East Adventure Centre is the place to go for anybody seeking outdoor action on land or water in the Waterford area. The centre caters for all ages and abilities, with activities including sea and river kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, archery, climbing, and orienteering.
The area around Dunmore East is criss-crossed with delightful walks, which have remained a local secret until recently. With the publication of a guide to seven local walks and the launch of the Dunmore East Rambling Weekend, however, that is starting to change. None of the walks are particularly challenging, and all offer wonderful views of this scenic corner of Ireland.
Head out from Dunmore East to the villages of Passage East and Cheekpoint, and you will encounter several locations of historic interest on the 12 km route. These include Killea, the megalithic tomb of Harristown, the Geneva Barracks, and the Knights Templar’s castle at Crooke.
Tee off by the sea at Dunmore East Golf Club, which offers an 18-hole, 72-par course on the coast with spectacular views of the village, the Hook Peninsula, and Waterford Harbour. Whatever your handicap, the course offers a stimulating challenge.
The Waterford Triathlon is staged in Dunmore East every year, offering the challenge of a 750m sea swim, 20km bike ride, and 6km run. The swim takes place in the shelter of Dunmore East Bay, the cycle follows the main Dunmore to Waterford road, and the run winds through quiet country roads before ending in the village.
