You’re in a very special place when visit Doolin. Alive with Irish music and within easy reach of the Burren, the Aran Islands, and the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin is a magical location.
Once a traditional fishing village, Doolin is now a world-famous centre for Irish traditional music. Thousands come here every year for the lively music sessions that make Doolin’s pubs among the best in Ireland.
At least three reputable companies offer boat trips to the Aran Islands, a mere 20-minute ferry ride from Doolin. Inis Oirr, Inis Meain, and Inis Mor each offer a unique version of authentic Irish culture, with Inis Mor being the most developed and home to the spectacular prehistoric fort Dun Aonghasa.
One of Doolin's legendary musicians was Micho Russell, a celebrated whistle player whose contribution to Irish music is celebrated with a weekend of traditional music held on the last full weekend in February each year. Festivities for the Russell Memorial Weekend begin with an "Open House" concert at the Russell Cultural Centre.
The Clare Coastal Walk Project is a dramatic cliff-top walk connecting the villages of Doolin and Liscannor via the Cliffs of Moher. The scenic coastal path follows the line of the cliffs from Doolin to Hag’s Head, offering exceptional views.
Pol an Ionain is a limestone cave near Doolin that is marketed as Doolin Cave. Home to what is believed to be the northern hemisphere’s biggest stalactite, it offers an exciting glimpse of a subterranean wonderland.
With Doolin Garden, designer Matt O’Connell has created a contemporary garden that complements its Burren surroundings beautifully. Scattered with hidden sections that resemble miniature gardens in themselves, this is a delight for those with any interest in gardening. An attached nursery sells plants grown in the garden.
For dramatic views of Galway Bay and the Aran Islands on one side and the rugged desolation of the Burren on the other, take a coastal loop drive from Doolin. Drive from Doolin along the Burren Way through Ballyvaughan, Kilfenora, and Lisdoonvarna before returning to Doolin.
Lisdoonvarna is a ten-minute drive from Doolin, so head here during September or October for one of the quirkiest festivals in Ireland. The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival is Europe's biggest singles’ event, with dances running from noon each day and continuing into the early hours. If you don’t find love, you can always enjoy the set dancing exhibitions and live Irish music.
The flat open plains of the Burren make Doolin a great base for a horseback expedition. Choose from lake and beach trails, or hack the ancient Burren Highways or Green Roads. Local stables offer day-long, three-day, and week-long trails.
Doolin is the hub for the North Clare Cycle Network, a selection of four new cycle routes ranging from 18 km to 47 km. All of the routes offer amazing views and well-serviced stop-off points where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings.
