Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
With its windswept mountains and Europe’s highest sea cliffs, Donegal presents challenging terrain for any golf course designer, but the rewards are immeasurable. The breathtaking scenery provides a magnificent backdrop for some exceptional courses.
Ballyliffin is Ireland’s most northerly golf club, with two fine courses - The Old Links and the Glashedy Links - both set among spectacular dunes overlooking the Atlantic. The Glashedy layout is interwoven with the Old Links, the holes scattered through the dunes. This course is extremely tough, its 6,400 metres incorporating nine savage, 365-metre-plus par-4’s. On the Old Course (renovated by Nick Faldo’s design team), the 173-metre par-3 5th (“The Tank”) stands out.
Set on the secluded Murvagh peninsula, the 18-hole course at Donegal Golf Club is considered Eddie Hackett’s finest creation. The layout is two extended loops of nine holes, with the front nine running anti-clockwise, and the back nine running clockwise inside the outward nine. The par-3 5th hole is a demon, the next three holes are spectacular, and the exciting back nine includes a brutish par-3 16th. If you’re a serious golfer, Donegal should top your must-play list.
Letterkenny Golf Club features a brilliantly upgraded parkland layout, the brainchild of Declan and Ronan Brannigan, who have turned land on the Barnhill estate bordering Lough Swilly into one of the finest courses in Ireland. Hewn from natural woodlands on the lake shores, the par-72, 5,880-metre course was originally designed by Eddie Hackett, who capitalised on the magnificently scenic natural setting. The 2007 overhaul has remedied the perennial issue of drainage.
Offering panoramic views of Gweebarra Bay, Narin & Portnoo is a charmingly old-fashioned course that winds around the dunes and offers challenges for all abilities. Launched in 1930, the course has been revamped to present a new par-73 layout that incorporates a variety of teeing areas and an increased range of required shots to negotiate the terrain. You’ll need every kind of shot here - from precise tee shots down meandering fairways to high shots downwind into elevated greens.
An overlooked gem on the Fanad peninsula, Portsalon Golf Club is among the nine founder members of the Golfing Union of Ireland, the world’s oldest golfing union. An exceptional par-72, 6,200-metre golf links easily accessible from airports Derry and Belfast Airports, it offers a pristine natural links setting, set against the Knockalla mountains and the white strands of Portsalon. Originally designed in the 1880s by Charles Thompson, it was overhauled in 2000 by Pat Ruddy, and is currently being enhanced by Irish professional Paul McGinley.
