Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
Europe’s highest sea cliffs, world-beating surfing beaches, and a reputation for warm hospitality are among the reasons why you and your family will love Donegal. Toddlers, teenagers, tired parents - they’ll be charmed by this northwestern gem.
Bundoran Waterworld is an award-winning family leisure centre, which may prove a godsend on your Donegal family holiday - particularly if (when) it rains. It offers two leisure pools, a wave pool with five wave patterns and rapids, as well as a slide pool with the Tornado Flume and the exciting Whizzer Slide. Adults will enjoy the sauna and steam room, steam cabinets, sea baths, and sea water drench shower treatment rooms.
Flanked by the stunning Atlantic Ocean, Donegal has some of the best beaches in the world. Rossnowlagh, Mullaghmore, and Port Salon top many people’s list of top beaches, with other impressive strands including the blue-flag Rathmullen, Bundoran, Dunfanaghy and Glencolmcille. Surfers flock to this county, and if you would like to try the sport or perfect your skills, head to Bundoran, Downings, Rossnowlagh, or Dunfanaghy, where you’ll find surf schools and surfing equipment for hire.
Plunge into the heart of Glenveagh National Park and you will find yourself in a magnificent setting of woodlands, mountains, lakes, and glens, where red deer and golden eagles roam. The award-winning visitor centre, at the northern edge of the park, will introduce the family to the local flora and fauna, and there is an impressive Scottish-style castle, surrounded by one of the finest gardens in Ireland. Glenveagh National Park is located 24 km northwest of Letterkenny.
Whether you like it or not, lots of kids are fascinated by guns, and there’s a collection of pretty big 20th-century ones at the Fort Dunree Military Museum in Buncrana. The centre uses cutting-edge DVD and interactive technology to recreate the unique history of the fort, and it also houses military memorabilia and artefacts. The fort is in a magnificent natural setting rich in wildlife, with many scenic walks and an enticing cafe.
The Dunlewey Lakeside Centre is a fascinating farm museum and family centre at the base of the spectacular, double-peaked Mount Errigal, Donegal’s highest mountain. Kids can feed farmyard animals and red deer, as well as join in the storytelling boat trips and traditional music evenings. Other activities include weaving demonstrations and guided tours of a weaver’s cottage. The centre also offers an adventure play area, restaurant, and tea room.
