Proud recipient of the most Blue Flag Awards in Ireland in 2013, Donegal is the beach capital of the north. Surfers have known for years about the exceptional waves that break around this part of the world, and now the rest of us are starting to discover the breathtaking beauty of the Donegal coast. Here are just five Donegal beach beauties:
Named the second-most beautiful beach in the world by the Observer newspaper, Portsalon is a glistening wedge of golden sand that slips gently into the Atlantic beneath magnificent skies and towering mountains. The entire location belongs to a National Heritage Area, so there is an abundance of wildlife and some simply spectacular views. A headland shelters the beach from extreme Atlantic weather.
One of the most delightful sights you will encounter in Donegal is the vision of waves breaking out to sea and rolling in a succession of white horses on the crescent of loveliness that is Rossnowlagh. Nicknamed “the heavenly cove,” it is located 8 km northwest of Ballyshannon and 16 km south of Donegal Town, with wonderful views of the Donegal Bay coastline - including Slieve League, the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Rossnowlagh curves around 4 km of golden sand, and is ideal for a range of watersports - especially surfing. Conditions are ideal for bathing, with lifeguard patrols in summer.
There are many silver strands across the country, but if you're from Donegal, there's only one worth bothering about. A horseshoe-shaped beach near Glencolmcille, Silver Strand is uniquely stunning, with the sand curving around the sparkling ocean at Malin Beag. The beach is reached by a series of steps and has a reputation is a fine spot for shore angling.
Located on the south west coast of the county on the outskirts of Killybegs town, Fintra is yet another Donegal Blue Flag beach. Sheltered and patrolled by lifeguards in summer, Fintra is very popular among locals and day trippers. This fine, sandy beach is approached via a steep road off the R263, which delivers exceptional views of the beach and Donegal Bay, as far as Sligo's Benbulben mountain.
Up there with Rossnowlagh as a surfing location on a par with the best that Hawaii and California have to offer, Bundoran has been described as "a surfer's paradise"Â by no less an authority than the Stormrider guide. Bundoran presents varied, challenging reef and beach breaks, as well as opportunities for novice and intermediate surfers. And if the thought of surfing leaves you cold, Bundoran is also a Blue Flag beach ideal for swimming and relaxing with the family.
