Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
The only drawback of golfing in Cork is that the stunning scenery may distract you from the excellence of the courses. Whether parkland or links courses, a mix of history and distinctively Irish terrain makes golf in Cork a truly memorable experience.
Situated at Little Island, Cork Golf Club is a championship course that makes excellent use of its varied terrain. A limestone foundation means excellent drainage and a links-type setting on some holes, while lush parkland surrounds others. The river plays a major role on the 3rd, 4th and 5th holes, and steep chasms make for some exciting golf. Established in 1888, the course was redesigned by the Augusta National designer, Alister MacKenzie, in 1927.
Host to the Irish Open in 2001 and 2002, Fota Island Golf Resort is home to a 5-star hotel, and an equally impressive golf course. A rolling 780 acre estate with magnificent woodlands just outside Cobh, it offers 3 challenging championship courses. These traditional-style courses include strategically positioned bunkers and rolling putting greens. Designed by Christy O'Connor Jr. in 1993, the club was upgraded to European Tour standards by Jeff Howes Golf Designs in 1998.
A unique gem among golf courses, Lisselan Golf Club in Clonakilty is a 9-hole parkland course designed in 1994 by Christy O'Connor Sr, with two sets of tees at each hole to facilitate playing each one twice. The Arigideen River flows through an 80-acre site flanked by mature woodlands, and two trains bring golfers from holes one to two and holes three to four. The course's signature hole is the 8th, which brings you across and along the river to the lovely Lisselan Gardens.
Established in 1908, Monkstown is a mature, attractive parkland course. It offers a good test of skill for all levels of experience and a varied selection of holes. The original nine holes of the course bring you to the crest of a hill, with sweeping views of the River Lee and Cork's busy lower harbour, and the water features of the back nine complete a layout that requires both nuance and courage. The clubhouse is also renowned for its restaurant.
Links Magazine voted the Old Head of Kinsale the most spectacular golf course in the world in 2011, and it's easy to see why. One of the most sought-after golf experiences on the planet, the Old Head of this luxury golf resort is a 4km promontory blasted by the Atlantic, with nine holes positioned along the cliff tops, and each one of the 18 holes offering spectacular ocean views. A par 72, it extends over 6,600 metres, with five Par 5s, five Par 3s and eight Par 4s.
