Hi, my name is Caragh. It's my responsibility to ensure that all our customers have a great rental experience on PlacesToStay.com. My favourite place to stay in Ireland is Dingle!
Nestled between two drumlins, Cavan is gentle place of lakes and rivers. Said to have a lake for every day of the year, this home of the mighty Shannon has much to offer visitors and is the ideal place to recharge your batteries.
The Cavan Way is an approachable 26km walking trail that extends from the village of Dowra along unpaved paths and quiet roads to the Shannon Pot, source of the mighty river. The route then climbs through the limestone landscape of the Northern Cuilcagh before descending to the village of Blacklion.
The Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark in Blacklion is a UNESCO-recognised site of cascades, abbeys, forests, and stunning show caves. It extends across the counties of Fermanagh and Cavan, with a variety of guided walks, activity days, and jeep safaris available for all the family.
Enjoy the peace of Drumlane Monastery’s serene lakeside setting, 1 km from Milltown village. Established either by the 6th-century bishop of Ferns, St. Mogue, or the 12th-century St. Colmcille, the monastery has fallen into ruins but still retains its round tower, church, graveyard and fragments of a cross-inscribed stone.
Fishing in Belturbet is one of the most pleasurable things you can do in County Cavan. The area is dominated by the River Erne and its many lakes, offering some of the best coarse fishing in Ireland. You can buy fishing tackle and bait locally. The best place for fly fishing is "between the bridges," with many fine game angling river stretches and wild brown trout lake fisheries to choose from in the area.
The Festival of the Erne in Belturbet is one of the biggest festivals in the region, with eight days of August fun kicking off with the Lady of the Erne contest. Events include a treasure hunt, a kids fancy dress competition, and the northwest's largest adults fancy dress competition.
Celebrate the fruits of autumn with the Virginia Pumpkin Festival, an October event with something for everyone. The programme includes haunted forest walks, a fancy dress ball, artisan food and craft fairs, and street entertainment.
Gerry Whelan Weekend A talented bodhran and melodeon player and a committed advocate on behalf of Irish traditional music, Gerry Whelan has inspired an annual celebration of Irish music and dance in Cootehill. The Gerry Whelan Weekend takes place every September, with concerts, workshops, caint agus comhra, pub sessions, Oiche Cois Tine, and a marching band performance.
Housed in a fine 19th-century building at Virginia Road, Ballyjamesduff, Cavan County Museum showcases the material culture of Cavan. Exhibitions include artefacts from the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages, as well as medieval items. A GAA Gallery has also opened recently.
Killykeen Forest Park nestles in the heart of Cavan's lakelands, just 8 km west of Cavan Town. Follow marked trails into the dense forests, where the park's wildlife thrives against the backdrop of Lough Erne.
See Cavan in a new light from the saddle. Ross House in Mountnugent, Redhills Equestrian Centre in Killynure, and Cavan Equestrian Centre in Latt offer a range of horseback activities, including trekking and hourly lessons.
