Hello, my name is Aoife O'Carroll and I'm part of the PlacesToStay.com team. I'm here to tell you about the great places you can experience when you book with us.
Nestled on the southern coast of the Iveragh peninsula against a backdrop of dramatic mountain and coastal scenery in Derrynane Bay, Caherdaniel is a stop on the Ring of Kerry tour that has much to offer the visitor.
Derrynane House is the ancestral family home of Daniel “The Liberator” O’Connell, a 19th-century politician who fought successfully for Catholic Emancipation, believing it would mark the first stage in attaining Home Rule. The house and grounds are open to the public every day during the summer months. Don’t miss the spectacular gold carriage O’Connell rode through the streets of Dublin on his release from prison.
Derrynane National Historic Park comprises 120 hectares of beautiful landscapes, including woods and scenic coastline. Well-signed nature trails guide visitors through the park, which is flanked by a 1.5km long, sandy beach. There is a useful nature trail booklet available at Derrynane House.
The stunning blue flag beach in Derrynane Bay is the ideal location for family days out. Bring the bucket and spade and swimsuits, and you’re all set for a day of fun at the beach. Water-sports enthusiasts will be delighted to discover that Derrynane Beach is the perfect base for activities from swimming, diving, and surfing to kayaking, wakeboarding, and sailing.
Ahamore or Derrynane Abbey is a ruined abbey next to Derrynane House. Located on Abbey Island, it is accessible from the mainland at low tide via the beach. The abbey is believed to have been built in the 6th century.
Caherdaniel is named after the stone fort (Caher) located on the Kerry Way trail that runs north of the village. Built about 600 B.C, the fort is a stone ring that was used for defence and observation.
The Kerry Way, which runs north of Caherdaniel, is the longest and one of the most scenic hiking trails in Ireland. You may not be up to tackling all 214 km of this circular hike of the Iveragh peninsula, but it’s well worth exploring at least part of it. The trail is divided up into manageable sections, and route maps are available to help you plan your walk.
Boat trips to the Skellig Islands leave from Bunavalla Pier in Caherdaniel. Skipper John O’Shea brings small groups out to the iconic Skellig Michael, home to countless seabirds and a spectacular monastic settlement reached by scaling 600 steps.
Whether you are a novice or a seasoned expert, Caherdaniel is a haven for equestrian pursuits. Enjoy beach, mountain, and woodland treks surrounded by the lush scenery of Derrynane National Park. Eagle Rock Equestrian Centre is AIRE approved and caters for riders of all standards.
About 5km north-northeast of the Sneem-Parknasilla road is Staigue Fort, one of Ireland’s biggest and best-preserved ring forts. It is located on a small hill against a backdrop of rugged hills open to the sea on the south. Walls up to 5.5m high and 4m thick surround a circular area containing two small chambers with corbelled roofs reminiscent of the much older passage grave at Newgrange.
Fading Light is a weekend celebration of music, art, and the outdoors that takes place on the October bank holiday weekend (25th-28th) in Caherdaniel. Enjoy acts such as OCHO, Little xs for Eyes, Ana Gog, Biggles Flys Again, and Sfumato.
