None other than National Geographic has ranked Bundoran among the world’s leading surf destinations, up there with hot-spots in Hawaii, California, and Bali. It may not be as balmy as Bali, but Bundoran has the waves to make it a magnet for veterans and would-be surfers alike.
For fans of music or surfing or both, Bundoran’s Sea Sessions festival should already be a fixture on your calendar. The weekend event in June has exploded in popularity in the past four years, attracting top Irish and international surfers, as well as musical talent from Ziggy Marley to the Fun Lovin’ Criminals.
Launched in 2012, Lobsters & Lettuce is a weekend festival that illustrates the quirky creativity in this part of the world. L&L celebrates Bundoran’s ties with the sea, both in terms of food and fun. The inaugural event included an open-air barbecue, live music, competitions, walking tours, and a range of talks and presentations.
Go sea fishing in Donegal Bay and your catch could include any of up to 30 different species of fish. Tuna is a recent visitor in great demand, with a record 394kg specimen caught in 2001. Excellent shore fishing locations stretch from Bundoran to Rossnowlagh Beach, with the most commonly caught species including pollock, cod, wrasse, conger, fluke, and flounder
Anyone who has ever relaxed in a bath of seaweed knows what an incredibly invigorating experience it is. Bundoran Seaweed Baths offer a range of individual and twin bathing rooms, which include steam cabinets, seaweed baths with filtered and heated sea water, fresh local seaweed, and a bracing sea-water drench shower. A range of other sea-based treatments are available.
Launched in 1987, the annual West Coast Challenge has grown to attract amateur golfers from across the world to the fine links courses of Donegal, Bundoran, Strandhill, and Enniscrone. Each of these northwestern golf courses offers a superb test of golf for the nonprofessional player.
As you might expect from a location with a such a spectacular coastal setting, Bundoran has some stunning seaside walks. The Cliff Walk starts from the Tourist Information Office in Bundoran and continues westward along the cliff top over the River Bradog. Rougey Walk is a loop starting from the same point and offering wonderful views of the Atlantic.
This annual celebration of music, drama, literature, and the visual arts brings the area around Bundoran and Donegal Bay to life every autumn. Staged in October, it features events in Ballybofey, Donegal Town, Dunkineely, Glenties, and Ballyshannon, as well as Bundoran.
A fixture in Bundoran since 1991, Waterworld is one of the country’s leading indoor water parks. The main attractions are the wave pool and triple-flumed slide pool, with a recent refurbishment introducing exciting new slides and features.
Gallop through the surf or admire the views on a gentle amble along the dunes - horse riding in Bundoran is the perfect way to enjoy this seaside location. Donegal Equestrian Centre provides riding lessons, pony camps, and guided beach and trail rides for all levels of experience.
