Tallinn Hotels Guide - Where To Stay In The City

TallinnWhether on business or pleasure, on a budget trip or luxurious weekend, there's a Tallinn hotel to suit you. This beautiful Estonian city has recently become one of the top destinations in Europe for a city break, and because of this popularity, Tallinn hotels are mushrooming up all over the city!

So you're heading to Tallinn and it's your first visit - where do you stay? Read our guide which will give you an insight into the main hotel locations in the city.

Old Town

The 'Old Town' is the tourist hub of the city and the most popular place for Tallinn hotels. This beautiful part of the city features old city walls, cobbled streets, merchant houses, historic towers and churches.

The historic centre dates back to medieval times (15th-17th century) and due to Tallinn's location close to the coast it became a major trading centre during the 14th century, which really helped the city to flourish.

Although the city was bombed by the Soviets during WWII, fortunately much of the historic city centre survived the attacks.

Sights to see in the Old Town include; Viru Gate which leads to Viru Street – one of the trendiest shopping streets in Tallinn. The old square in the heart of the Old Town is called Raekoda Square – a lively square lined with cafes and restaurants. The Raekoda Town Hall (dated 1371) can be found here.

Other notable attractions here include the magnificent Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (a 19th century Russian Orthodox Church), the Estonian Parliament 'Riigikogu' – you can't miss this pink building! The oldest church in Tallinn St. Mary's Cathedral is located here as well as the Museum Of Occupations.

The 'Old Town' is the best place to base yourself if you want all these attractions just steps from your hotel door. It's also got some of the best restaurants, shopping and nightlife that this city has to offer.

Ferry Terminal

The Ferry Terminal is a busy part of the city as boat and ferry are one of the most popular ways of getting to Tallinn. Tallinn is strategically located on the Gulf of Finland just 70km across the water from the city of Helsinki. There are upto 20 departures daily in the peak season from Helsinki to Tallinn Port. The price is cheap and the travel distance is short so this is a very popular route for travellers.

You can also take some very pleasant day cruises from Tallinn Port. There are lots of Tallinn hotels situated close to the waterfront and near the port with the city centre is just a leisurely 15 minute stroll away from here.

Pirita Beach

One of Tallinn's gem's is Pirita Beach! It's located in the Pirita District, about a 20 minute drive from Tallinn city. The beach is known for its Baltic bliss – 3km of white sands, blue waters and palm trees – yes this is Estonia but feels like the Carribean! When the weather is hot the beach is busy with sunbathers and swimmers, but if the weather is cool don't be disappointed there's still plenty to do in this area with lots of forest walks and botanic gardens to explore.

If you choose Tallinn hotels in this area you'll be close to the beach, a short drive from the city and surrounded by wonderful parks and gardens – what more could you ask for?

Near the Airport

Tallinn Airport (Lennart Meri Airport) is 5km from the city centre so it's not that far. However if you are staying for a short while then you could choose a Tallinn Airport hotel as your base. The airport is well connected to the city centre by public transport.

There's a wide range of hotels in Tallinn and you'll be glad to know that Estonians claim to have one of the highest standards of hotels in Eastern Europe. With the Tallinn hospitality industry in overdrive, there's never been more choice when it comes to hotels. You can choose from 1 star to 5 star depending on whether you're looking for cheap hotels in Tallinn or luxurious Tallinn hotels – there's something for everyone.
