New Service Aims For Dublin Airport Motorbike Transfers

If the legal wrangling can be sorted out, a unique transfer service could be operating out of Dublin Airport next month. Welcome to the world of Airbike, a company that is planning to offer a passenger pick-up and drop-off service from Dublin Airport to the city.

Airbike is aiming to start its new service from 4th August 2009 and will offer arriving and departing passengers to Dublin Airport the opportunity to ride pillion on a motorcycle as an alternative to using a taxi, public transport or even parking at the airport.

The public will be able to book their journey either online or by calling Airbike directly. You will then be picked up by an experienced driver, given a helmet, gloves, over-jacket and waterproof gear to protect you from the elements. Call-out fee will be €25 with a fee of €2 per km.

However, the new service has been met with some problems already as Ireland's Minister For Transport Noel Dempsey has stated that he believes the service may be operating illegally but a spokeswoman for Mr. Dempsey has said that the minister would be prepared to consider legislation to cover a motorcycle taxi service.

Airbike director Greg Carley has said that his company has met with the Taxi Regulators Office and have had it confirmed that because motorcycles aren't covered within their regulations that Airbike does not require a "taxi licence" as they are not claiming to be a taxi service. Mr. Carley has stated that Airbike has "got the insurance to carry passengers for reward".

Whatever the outcome, its certainly an original idea for passengers arriving into Dublin Airport and will be a welcome addition for some people who are travelling with hand luggage and need a quick transfer into the city.

Would you use a motorcycle transfer system? Apparently some of these already successfully operate in other cities around the world – let us know what you think!
