Christmas is fast approaching so for a pre-Yuletide break with a difference, get yourself down to the south west of Ireland and enjoy a festive stay in the charming town of Killarney, County Kerry.
Here's our 7 good reasons to visit Killarney this Christmas!
(1) The shopping -
That's right, Killarney is filled with souvenir and craft shops where you can pick up a really unique Christmas gift for your loved one. Just wander around the streets of Killarney and browse through each shop or pop into Killarney Outlet Centre for some "all under one roof" shopping. Open air Christmas markets are also held in Killarney on various dates so you might pick up an extra unique gift!
(2) The atmosphere -
The Christmas music performances, the decorations all combine to create a wonderfully festive atmosphere in Killarney. The streets will be bustling with shoppers and you might even come across a Christmas market or two where the locals will be peddling everything from hand crafts to homemade treats.
(3) The nightlife -
Killarney's nightlife really comes to life around Christmas time and you'll find lots of welcoming pubs where festive entertainment is laid on for customers. All pubs will be brightly decorated and you'll be filled with Christmas cheer as locals and visitors alike get into the party mood.
(4) The scenery -
Killarney is a stunningly picturesque town at the best of times but it is particularly beautiful during the lead up to Christmas when bright, crisp days with views of snow capped mountains and misty lakeside scenes are the norm. A visit to Killarney National Park for a walk or cycle is a great way to spend a few hours in the run up to Christmas.
(5) The shows & concerts -
The weeks before Christmas see lots of shows and concerts being held either in major venues or just smaller community halls. Some top acts will visit the INEC Events Complex during December 2009 while other venues to host Christmas shows include St. Marys Church Killarney and some local hotels will host charity related events too.
(6) Santa's Lodge -
Held in the ridiculously quaint and charming Deenagh Lodge in Killarney National Park, Santa's Lodge is one of the top attractions in Killarney every Christmas. What makes this so unique is that the attraction is based around the concept of giving where kids leave a gift or make a donation at the Giving Tree...really nice twist on the tradition of presents at Christmas and all for a good cause.
(7) The Christmas lights -
The streets of Killarney will be decked in colourful, twinkling Christmas lights that will create a wonderful sight. The main shopping streets will be illuminated by all sorts of festive displays and some shops put alot of effort into their window displays so this adds even more to the superb street displays. And on Friday 4th December 2009 (date is yet to be fully confirmed, check Christmas In Killarney website for more information), you can experience the truly wonderful Children's Torch Light Parade which will finish with the official switching on of Killarney's Christmas lights.
