A favourite haunt among residents of Tralee, Co. Kerry, Banna lies on the Atlantic coast, with a beach stretching from Ballyheigue in the north to Barrow Beach in the south. It is located about 12 km north west of Tralee.
Families have been drawn to Banna for years, appreciating the endless strand with its golden sand, pretty sea-shells, and lovely little rock pools, as well as the shelter of the sand dunes for picnickers. Banna Beach is a great day trip from Tralee, Fenit or Ballyheigue.
Banna is a haven for walkers, with gorgeous views of the mountains of the Dingle Peninsula on the south-west horizon, Kerry Head and the Maulin Mountain to the north-west, and Mucklaghmore Rock directly out to sea. The towering sand dunes are a designated area of conservation and a habitat for rare plants and animals.
During the summer months, novices and experts alike can enjoy a range of water pursuits, including kite- and wind surfing. Weekend and week-long training courses are offered in both kite-surfing and wind-surfing.
Banna Strand has an established position in Irish history as the place where Irish patriot Roger Casement was captured on 21 April 1916, after landing from a German U-Boat attempting to bring arms for Irish Republicans involved in the 1916 Rising. He was later executed for treason. a monument at Banna commemorates Casement and a man called Robert Monteith.
Situated within Tralee Bay, 13 km from Banna, Fenit is an attractive harbour where you can take a 20-minute boat trip to visit Little Samphire Island Lighthouse. Tour guides provide informative and entertaining commentary on this beautiful island with a fascinating history.
Blennerville Windmill is an unmissable landmark in Tralee Bay. Visit the working mill and see the audio-visual presentation, as well as an exhibition gallery, craft shop and restaurant. You can also experience the sensation of travelling by steam train 3 km from Blennerville to Tralee and back. Opened in May 2013, the Tralee and Dingle Model Railway is the newest attraction at the Blennerville Windmill complex.
The new Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre adjoins the Tralee Bay Nature Reserve, an area of 8,000 acres stretching from the town of Tralee to the Maharee Islands. Free to access, the wetlands centre includes an activity lake with pedal boats, canoes, and rowing boats for hire, lakeside walks, and a picnic area. A smaller lake stocked with freshwater fish offers fishing demonstrations.
Just 4 km from Banna, Ardfert is a picturesque heritage village full of fascinating historical and architectural attractions. Visit the ruins of Ardfert Cathedral, founded in 1253. Ardfert Friary is about 1km east of the cathedral.
Banna offers exceptional shore fishing. Recommended spots include stretches north and east of the Black Rock, and Carrahane, known as “an poll gorm,” which is north of Banna.
Golfers don’t have to go far from Banna to get a round in. The 9-hole course at Ardfert Golf Centre and the 18-hole course at Tralee Golf Club are both nearby.
